In Episode 5, Matt and Phil read from the listener mailbag, and have our first fashion segment with a question for the listeners.  We also bring out the new awards feature Where we give awards to the best and worst things we experienced in the week: The “Thing of the Week” and the “Whammy of the Week”, respectively.  The award winners in the “Thing of the Week” category are “How I Became Stupid” by Martin Page and “The Walking Dead, season 2, episode 3″  The big losers this week are the new Hawk and Dove comic, and “Howard the Duck: the Movie.”  Listen to the show to find out why.  Matt discusses the Mark Waid Daredevil comics, and the new issue of Optic Nerve by Adrian Tomine.  Also, If you make it to the end, you’ll hear the story of the crazy guy that wandered into Phil’s laundry room.

And now for a little player hating… Radiohead Edition

November 24, 2011

So if you haven’t listened to our most recently released episode (and you definitely should), the topic of discussion was music.  I went ahead and listed Radiohead as one of the most overrated bands ever.  Anyways, I found this blog post by Dave Lartigue that expresses some thoughts about Radiohead that are similar to mine, and puts them into words more eloquently than I could manage.  I liked this quote:

I also admit that I have a bad habit of letting something’s fans detract from my enjoyment of the thing itself, and Radiohead fans are extremely…vocal. Apparently you can’t be into Radiohead halfway. You’re either in it to win it or you’re an idiot with no musical taste who should go back to listening to N’Sync. So that could be a big part of it. After all, there are very few bands that could, to me, hold up to the kind of rabid word-of-mouth that Radiohead’s gotten.

also I liked this part.

Whatever the reason, I need to brace myself. They’ve got a new album coming out soon, and advance word is that it’s a work of genius which can cure cancer and end world hunger.

Anyway, check it out here at the excellent blog, “Dave Ex Machina”

You’ve waited for it, and here it is: Episode 4.  This is the music episode, and Phil and Matt discuss many things, from the question of whether or not the Kinks was the first punk band, the most underrated, and the most overrated bands, R.E.M. breaking up, R.E.M. vs The Clash, and New Jersey’s favorite musical sons, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.  If you make it to the end you’ll also get to hear the Carrot Cheesecake story.  Comments, questions, and complaints about the show can be directed to bombastpodcast@hotmail.com.

Bombast Podcast Episode 3 “Bombast At The Movies!”

October 28, 2011

I have exciting news!  Episode 3 of the podcast is out!  This episode is Episode 3 -”Bombast at the Movies: The Thing with Janine”  We discuss the recent movie “The Thing” based on the older movie from director John Carpenter.  We also discuss a lot of other stuff.  I think the episode is pretty appropriate for Halloween weekend.  This is actually episode 4, because Phil and I recorded another episode, but that one will probably be the next one I release.  So anyway, episode 4 became episode 3.  (Not that anyone cares, I’m sure.)

In Episode 3, Phil and Matt are joined by special guest Janine after watching The Thing in the movie theater.  Naturally, the Thing (2011) and the original John Carpenter/Kurt Russell “The Thing” from the 1980s are the main jumping off point of the conversation.  Topics discussed include suspense, movies in the 1980s versus now, movie remakes, Total Recall, current movie trailers, The Muppets, Harold and Kumar, Contraband, Storage Wars, Dumb and Dumber II: Dumb and Dumberer, when the movie is better than the book, the definition of a “boy band”, Ke$ha, “The Darkest Hour”, Transformers, and Michael Bay.

Bonus Content for Episode 3

October 28, 2011

Episode 3 will be available for listening and download soon, but in the meantime… here are some of the things we discuss on the show.

We (Phil, Janine and I) recorded the episode after watching the movie “The Thing”  and that’s one of the main things we discuss on the show.

Michael Bay re-used footage from his own movie The Island in one of the Transformers movies.  In the old days, hack B-movie directors and producers like Roger Corman used to use stock footage to save money.  In our current world of filmaking, Michael Bay, director of some of the most expensive (and profitable) moves, ever… is basically creating his own stock footage for use later… all on the investor’s dime!  What chutzpah!

Here’s another one… unbelievable.

And speaking of that Pearl Harbor movie, here’s my favorite joke about WWII movies, from the comic strip “Hark! A vagrant” by Kate Beaton.  It’s the third one down on the page.  http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=292

Peace out!  keep your ears open for episode 3!

In Episode 2, the sophomore slump episode, Phil and Matt are joined by their first guest, Rory!  Before that, there’s a bit of comics talk.  Topics discussed this episode include the DC Comics New 52 Reboot, Action Comics, Tumor by Joshua Hale Fialkov & Noel Tuazon, and Hawk & Dove. After that, we are joined by Rory, and we discuss Doctor Who, the concept of ‘British Sense of Humor’ PBS vs the BBC, WWE wrestling, and Amish country.  Comments, questions, and complaints about the show can be directed to bombastpodcast@hotmail.com.

“hey ya’ll, ep 2 is up now! got some more comics, dr. who, wrestling, amish people and special guest tom brokaw. i mean, rory. so, there should be something you like somewhere in this episode.” -Phil Jacke
